SAT R&W | How to use punctuation

This post will cover how to use punctuation in the SAT English section. If anything was missed in this resource, feel free to contact me @scripted_mari0 on discord or join the StudyHaven discord server.

Ending Punctuation

You probably already know these but we will go over them regardless.

The period (.) is used to signify the end of an independent sentence.

The exclamation mark (!) is used to end a sentence and show strong emotion or excitement.

The question mark (?) is used to end interrogative sentences.

Examples

Period - You will get a 1600 on the SAT.

Exclamation Mark - You will get a 1600 in the SAT!

Question Mark - Did you get a 1600 in the SAT?

Commas

You probably already know this too but still..

The comma (,) has many uses:

  • Separating items in a list
  • Introducing a quote
  • Setting off extra information

Examples
  • You will get a 1600 in the SAT, get into a good college, and get a good job.
  • He said, "I will get a 1600 in the SAT."
  • This person, who used StudyHaven, got a 1600 in the SAT.

Semicolons

This is probably the first time you are actually going to use semicolons, so read closely and understand everything.

Semicolons work somewhat similar to commas but also work like periods. You can use semicolons to separate two independent sentences as well as use it for separating items in a list.

Examples
  • You will get a 1600; he will also get a 1600.
  • My favorite things to do are get a 1600; get into a good college; get a good job.

Colons

Colons can be used to introduce a list as well as introduce extra info.

Examples
  • You will: get a 1600, get into a good college, get a good job.
  • You are a person: one that will get a 1600 in the SAT.

Apostrophes

An apostrophe is used to show ownership.

Examples
  • This person's SAT score is high.
  • The cats' stomachs are empty. (An apostrophe is put after the s because it shows ownership to multiple entities)

Hyphens

Hyphens are usually used to give extra information about something. They can be replacements for commas and parentheses in this context.

Examples
  • This person - who used StudyHaven - got a 1600 in the SAT.

Parentheses

Parentheses are also usually used to give extra information about something. They can also be replacements for commas as well as hyphens in this context.

Examples
  • This person (who used StudyHaven) got a 1600 in the SAT.

Quotation Marks

Quotation marks can be used to express something that a person or thing says in a sentence.

Examples
  • This person said, "I got a 1600 in the SAT!"
  • "I love StudyHaven," he said, "because it has so many resources!" (Notice how the comma is used inside the quotation marks instead of outside, this is a rule)
